Joseph Greenwell

Greenwell joined UC Berkeley as dean of students and associate vice chancellor (AVC) for student affairs in 2014. As dean of students, Greenwell is dedicated to the holistic learning journey of all students and to providing myriad programs and services that enhance student’s understanding of their values and those of others in the community. He serves as the point person for all complex and far-reaching student matters, including those involving religious conflict, complex student organization matters, high-level campus climate issues, and high-level student behavioral issues — for both undergraduate and graduate students. Additionally, Greenwell oversees the Public Service Center, the Center for Student Conduct, the Career Center, and the ASUC Student Union, which oversees over 1,000 student organizations and 76 fraternity and sorority organizations.

Having worked in the field for over twenty years, Greenwell has experienced changing student needs, campus climates, and external expectations of university campuses. He believes it is imperative to partner with the campus community, city, and state to be successful in serving students, faculty, staff, alumni, and community partners.

Prior to coming to Berkeley, Greenwell served as the dean of students at San Francisco State University. He also held positions focused on student support at Stanford University, Colgate University, and Vanderbilt University. He earned a master’s degree in higher education and a dual bachelor’s degree in psychology and music from Vanderbilt University and is currently a doctor of education candidate at Peabody College, class of 2018.
