David H. Romer

Romer, who occasionally advised Obama’s campaign on economic issues, is the Herman Royer Professor of Political Economy at Berkeley. He joined the Berkeley faculty in 1988 and was promoted to full professor in 1993. Romer is director of the Program in Monetary Economics at the National Bureau of Economic Research, and is a member of the NBER Business Cycle Dating Committee. He is also a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, a member of the American Economic Association Executive Committee, and a three-time recipient of Berkeley’s Graduate Economic Association’s distinguished teaching and advising awards. Romer’s recent research focuses on the effects of monetary and fiscal policy, sources of policy successes and failures, and business cycles. His other research interests include the foundations of price stickiness, empirical evidence on economic growth, and asset-price volatility. He is currently on leave from Berkeley at the International Monetary Fund, where he is a Senior Resident Scholar. He received his Ph.D. from M.I.T. in 1985.
