Global Poverty: Challenges and Innovations in the New Millennium

Description

Learn how the world at large — and Cal students in particular — are responding to the increasingly global nature of our society. See how Berkeley students use science and technology to enhance public health, particularly among the world’s poor.

Professor Roy will speak about the Blum Center for Developing Economies’ work and its relation to her ongoing research on issues of poverty and inequality. She will discuss the broader context of poverty, development, and social change and then discuss the role of Berkeley — and its students, in particular — in finding solutions.

As part of the Big Ideas @ Berkeley program, more than 100 student-led projects at Cal are addressing regional, national, and global challenges such as safe drinking water, global public health, public policy, entrepreneurship in life sciences and nanotechnology, clean energy, and sustainable development. In this talk, Kalil and some students will highlight Big Ideas projects that address pressing challenges in developing countries such as Bangladesh, Cambodia, Sri Lanka, Mexico, Sierra Leone, Nepal, Nigeria, Guatemala, and Ecuador.
